This paper is required for any genuine forged Japanese sword (nihonto) that is present in Japan. Toy, non-forged katanas or other practice samurai swords do not require
(and cannot obtain) any form of Japanese registration. According to Japanese law, this registration paper is removed from the sword only at such time as when the sword is shipped
outside of Japan. This registration applies to all forged Japanese swords, this includes katanas, wakizashis and even tantos (in Japan a tanto is considered a small Japanese sword, not
just a dagger or knife).
